sabe para onde ir, ou o que falar. Então, no episódio de hoje falaremos com o professor Daniel do
Cambly, para nos dar algumas dicas de como proceder no Airport/Aeroporto.

M: Let it begin.

Daniel: My name is Daniel, I’m from Los Angeles, currently living in Mexico, I’ve been here for the
last 17 years. I live in a little city called Hermosillo which is pretty much close to the United States
border between Mexico and US. Here I’ve been working and enjoying my life as a teacher.
Teacher Ca: I’m also a teacher. I’m Teacher Ca. I’m from Brazil and I’ve been working as a teacher
since 1998.

Daniel: Nice. You were mentioning that you wanted to discuss things about life and procedures at
an airport, correct?

Teacher Ca: Yes.

Daniel: Ok, I thought maybe going like general procedures at the airport. Step one, for example, if
you use an online or AutoCheck-in, there’s no need to go the check-in counter. And sometimes,
even though, people buy the tickets online, they still go to the counter as if they were going to
buy their ticket.
There’s a distinction on an airport procedure nowadays. You don’t have to go to the check-in counter
if you previously bought your ticket online or used AutoCheck-in.
Teacher Ca: A primeira dica que o tutor nos dá, é que se fizermos o procedimento do Check-in
online, não precisamos ir ao Balcão de Embarque. Ele disse que, às vezes, as pessoas acabam indo
até o Balcão de Embarque como se fossem comprar as passagens, pois muitos não sabem que já
não precisa mais; Check-in Counter/Balcão de Embarque.
Daniel: The next part of the process I guess would be Check-In your baggage. So usually you will
hear sayings like, “please, proceed to the baggage’s counter to Check-in your baggage”.
Fragile luggage Check-in will be given a special tag or sticker.
Teacher Ca: Próximo passo é fazer o despacho das bagagens/Check in your baggage. Você usa
baggage or luggage quando você quer dizer bagagem. Mas se quiser falar mala ou bolsa de
viagem, você pode dizer ‘bag’ ou ‘suitcase’. E quando for fazer o Check in, caso tenha alguma bagagem frágil, eles usarão uma ‘tag’/etiqueta ou um sticker/adesivo, dizendo que a sua bagagem
é frágil.

Daniel: One of the observations I would make is: always check your weight in your luggage.
Airlines have very specific regulations in terms of how heavy your luggage can be and if surpass it
a certain limit, then there’s an additional cost. Sometimes we are not aware of this until it
happens, then you’ll find out that you have to pay a little bit more than what you expected
because your luggage is too heavy.

Teacher Ca: Temos que prestar atenção também com o peso da bagagem, porque muitas vezes
não damos conta e acabamos tendo que pagar o excesso da bagagem. Então verificar o peso
também antes de ir para o aeroporto também é muito importante.

Daniel: The other process point here would be the security check. In this case, baggages would be
check at the checkpoint. In the United States there are always long lines, most of it depending on the
day can vary. For example, in certain parts in Canada that I’ve been, basically, the airport was
empty at the time I was there. So it was really easy. The next part I guess, especially if you’re going
to international traveling, if you’re arriving in the United States, for example, you must have
your documents ready.

Teacher Ca: Ao passar pela inspeção de segurança/security check, você vai precisar de algum
tempo. Então é importante que você tenha um tempo suficiente antes do embarque. Você pode
ou não pegar uma fila dependendo do aeroporto que esteja.

Daniel: And go through immigration. For the most part, immigration officers are helpful, you just
have to be very logical and honest with them, say exactly your reason for being there. If you’re
going to enter the country because of business or just for pleasure or a little bit of both.
One thing that I’ve noticed is that the more honest you are with them, the faster the whole
procedure is. One time I forgot I had an orange, they were Ok with it, but I had to get rid of it
because they do not allow fruits and vegetables to cross or enter the country. But I think I
would’ve got in trouble if I had not declared what I was bringing in. So honesty makes things a lot
easier in this part of the process.

Teacher Ca: Quando chegar na imigração/immigration, o grande negócio é ser honesto. Pois
quanto mais verdadeiro e honesto você for, mais rápido eles te liberam.

Daniel: Then I think step 5 which is the easiest now once passed the immigration you’re now into
the general airport zone where you’re going to [wait] your plane. In this case, it might
be a little bit daunting because some airports can be huge but usually, information is provided. The
announcements, hopefully, the sound equipment is clear enough for you to identify where your
gate is and your flight number. Usually, that makes things easier. Furthermore, I think boarding will
proceed in a very specific order depending on the number you have on your ticket, it’s 1, 2, 3, 4.
So based on that, that’s how people board their planes. Usually, they give priority to senior citizens
or passengers traveling with small children, expectant mothers, babies, handicap people who
require help. Probably they’ll be the first-class passengers, then the rest of the crew.
Teacher Ca: Depois de passar pela immigration/imigração, você precisa saber onde vai embarcar. E
eles anunciam de uma forma bem fácil. Eles só falam o portão de embarque/gate e o flight
number/número de vôo. No mais, o embarque será feito de uma maneira bem fácil, de acordo com o número que você tenha na passagem, vai do número 1 em diante. Geralmente eles dão
prioridade aos idosos, as gestantes, pessoas com deficiência física, com crianças, e por ai vai.
Eu pedi para que o tutor Daniel desse algumas palavras-chave sobre o aeroporto.

Daniel: Arrivals, Departures, Gate numbers. I guess another popular word would be Destination.
Usually, there’s a Pickup Zone, Luggage Retrieval. Based on your flight number, “please Pick up
your luggage at luggage retrieval number 5, for example.” It’s pretty much self-explanatory if you
really know how to follow arrows and indications. Usually, there’re people helping you out. That’s
pretty much, I think right now, that I can think of.

Teacher Ca: Arrivals/Desembarque, Departure/Embarque, Gate Number/Número do Portão,
Destination/Destino e o Pick up Zone é onde você vai pegar suas malas. Mas o tutor Daniel, do
Cambly, também deu a dica de seguir as setas. Sempre tem alguém disponível para te ajudar caso
você esteja com alguma dúvida.

mais algumas dicas de alguns vocabulários que vocês talvez possam ver no aeroporto.
Airport/ Aeroporto, Airplane/Avião, Airline/Linha Aérea, Boarding pass/Cartão de Embarque. Se o
seu avião estiver ‘Delayed’ quer dizer que ele está ‘Atrasado’, ‘On Time’ quer dizer que está no
horário certo. Flight/Vôo, Flight attendant/Comissárias de Bordo, Window seat/Assento da Janela,
Aisle Seat/Assento do Corredor, Carry on luggage/ Bagagem de Mão, Baggage Claim Area/Onde
Você Pega Suas Bagagens. A ‘Stop Over’ é quando você precisa fazer uma ‘Escala’; você tem que
trocar de avião antes do destino final.
