Hábitos dos Americanos na hora do almoço. Vamos ouvir?
M: Leit it begin.
Brain: Hi my name is Brian Hunt, I’m a tutor here on Cambly. I work 7 days a week and my full-time
job is classroom Teacher in languages students South Korea. So I teach everything. I’m not scared
of any subject.
Teacher Ca: Ok, perfect. Can you help us some talking about lunchtime habit in America?
Brian: Yes. It depends on what your life is at the moment of lunch, hat your job is or isn’t.
Teacher Ca: O tipo de almoço que você vai ter, depende do tipo de vida que você tem na hora do
almoço. Qual o seu trabalho, sua rotina. Vai depender.
Brin: If you are a student you’re going to go to some cafeteria at your school most like. And you’re
going to have your food already made in some lunch sack. The most common food for lunch or
salad or sandwich, because they are very easy to make and they keep. They don't spoil easily so
it's easy to keep it in a refrigerator or something. Fruits, some snacks.
Teacher Ca: Se você for um estudante, provavelmente você almoçará na cantina da escola. As
comidas mais comuns são saladas ou sanduíches, pois são fáceis de manter fora da geladeira e não
estragam com facilidade. Frutas e besteiras também são comuns.
Brian: Children like to eat all snacks during their lunch. One thing that you can see in films, in
America movies with children are that they’ll be like: “Fruit roll-ups. I only got this stupid apple. I like
apples. But I’ll tell you what, I’ll give you…” They’ll tread. They’ll tread food. Of course, their
mother don’t know any of this. But I’m thinking this is pretty much every culture that brings food
from home. That’s pretty much all students.
Teacher Ca: O Brian citou casos em que acontece das crianças levarem algo que não gosta para o
almoço e eles acabam trocando com os amigos, sem mesmo que as mães saibam; e que vemos
muito isso também em filmes.
Brian: If you’re not a student, you’re either are at home during lunchtime or you’re at work. Very
few people are big groups during lunch time. It’s usually the housewife, the one parents. They’re
busy with the house. If they’re out in about they’ll go to some restaurant or Drive-Thru. But they
wanna do something simple. So it’s similar to preparing food for the school. Once again, dried
fruits, fresh fruits, cookies, snacks, maybe some left. My favorite lunchtime is left-over food from
the night before. In a microwavable container because then it’s the good stuff during lunchtime.
Teacher Ca: So it’s ready to be eaten?
Teacher Ca: Durante a hora do almoço é muito raro ter um grupo de pessoas em casa. Então
geralmente não tem ninguém em casa ou tem somente uma pessoa, dona de casa por exemplo, e
essas pessoas que ficam em casa acabam estando ocupados e acabam tendo pouco tempo para
cozinhar. Se estão na rua as pessoas comem fora passam por um Drive-Thru, mas querem sempre
algo muito simples, nada demais. Se fizerem alguma coisa para almoçar é uma coisa bem simples
mesmo. A opção que uma pessoa pode fazer se estiver em casa para cozinhar, uma coisa bem
simples, as pessoas comem frutas na hora do almoço, um lanche, um biscoito, frutas secas. Coisas
bem simples, coisas bem parecidas com que as crianças levam para escola. O que sobrou da noite
anterior também pode ser uma opção. O almoço favorito do Brian é quando tem sobras/left-overs
da noite passada. Então ele adora quando tem uma ‘left-over’ da noite passada. Então ele fala que
é a parte favorita quando tem essas obras para ele almoçar.
Brian: So if they’re eating rice, beans and stuff like that, it’s from the night before. It’s food leftover
from the big dinner. Because to make that cooking that takes a lot of time and Mama doesn’t want
to do that.
Teacher Ca: Se um Americano estiver comendo comida de verdade na hora do almoço é porque é
sobra da noite anterior. Para fazer comida tipo arroz, feijão para o almoço, leva muito tempo.
Então eles acabam não perdendo esse tempo com o almoço. Quando eles fazem alguma coisa é
mais para o jantar então o almoço eles não ocupam o tempo deles para isso. É uma coisa bem
simples e prática sempre
Brian: So even in a traditional cooking the lunch time cooking would be simple.
Teacher Ca: Mesmo que estejamos falando de cozinha tradicional, o preparo do almoço é sempre
simples.
Brian: If you’re talking about farmers, for instance, farmers never leave the house or never leave
the property. What it’ll happen is, in the traditional sense, the husband out working at the field in the
field and the wife is the house, let’s just say. Nowadays things are a little bit different from time to
time but in general. And a lot of women still like traditional. So let’s a woman’s in house. So she’s
busy with the big cooking for the dinner, which takes many hours. Maybe there’s slow cooker
crock-pot or something with the roast or it’s the oven. So while that’s cooking she’ll
make simple foods to take out to her husband in the field or other workers. Or quick soup, quick
stew, stuff that is very easy to make like pasta, salad. Salads are really easy to make and it’s very
healthy. So that’s why salad it’s very popular.
Teacher Ca: O Brian disse que se estivermos falando de fazendeiros, por exemplo, que sempre
estão em casa e eles trabalham na propriedade mesmo. Então mesmo que tem alguém em casa,
essa pessoa estará fazendo a janta, estará ocupada para fazer a janta. Se tiver alguém que leve, na
verdade, ou preparando alguma comida, como as esposas, por exemplo, preparando a comida
para as pessoas que estão trabalhando, é uma coisa sempre simples. Então uma coisa bem simples
para os maridos que estão no campo trabalhando as esposas preparam coisas simples. Eles
preparam os sempre uma sopinha que rápida, um ensopado, uma sopa, um ensopadinho. Coisas
bem fáceis de fazer, uma massa, uma pasta, uma salada. Uma coisa bem simples e rápida.
Brian: But all I wanted to say was if you are an adult working in a corporate field, then lunchtime
habit is wherever I feel like it. Because if you are in the corporate center with lots of little
restaurants, you can eat good food because there are all the chefs making it for you. In many
places in America you have the option to do all of this.
Teacher Ca: Mas se você for adulto que trabalha em uma corporação, por exemplo, o hábito do
almoço é qualquer um que você queira. Porque se você trabalha em uma corporação você
trabalha, geralmente perto de vários restaurantes e você pode comer boa comida porque sempre
tem chefes cozinhando para os trabalhadores.
Teacher Ca: What about during the weekend, how does it work?
Brian: It really depends on what’s happening. I’m a very independent guy. I’m married, I appreciate
when my wife cooks for me but I’m a cooker. My grandmother taught me how to cook when I was
very young. She said: “Your mother is a terrible cooker. So I’m going to teach you how to do it”.
The point was, my grandmother taught all of her grandchildren to cook, male and female and she's
very traditional American wife. But she wanted everyone know how to cook. Because she figured
that most girls would probably end up cooking for their families in the long-term, even in a
changing society of 1970s and 80s. But even if men marry a woman who likes to cook, a man
needs to know how to take care of himself because he may be a wild till he gets married. And he
can impress a woman too by his skills. So my grandmother would teach. So I learn how to make all
kinds of food. So on the weekends I like to grill. I like to go outside and to do slow cooking. So
what we will do is: I had a smoker, a large machine, and we put big racks of meat that would cook
very slowly. But next to it was the fire, the flame, and we will cook hot-dogs and sausages over the
flame. So we have the fast cooking, the slow cooking. We have a wood fire. If we were traveling
it would be like preparing the kids for school. So we would make a picnic lunch, sandwiches and
snacks, fruit and vegetables, little carrots. It’s the weekend we time off. Lunch is just whatever
you can make because you do have more time but you’re relaxing. And if it’s weekend – I don’t
know about you – but I’m very busy on my weekends. I travel, I do projects around the house. I’m
building a new Lego set for my classes. There’s all kinds of things I’m doing because I’m not in class.
I’m studying. I have to study Korean language on the weekends. So I never have a weekend.
Teacher Ca: Eu perguntei sobre os almoço nos finais de semana. Ele disse que como todos tem
uma semana bem ocupada, acaba ficando cansativo cozinhar. Então eles acendem a
churrasqueira, fazem hambúrgueres, hot-dogs, qualquer coisa que queira fazer, pois por mais que
tenha mais tempo, eles estão relaxando. Eles preferem usar para relaxar não para ficar na cozinha.
Caso a pessoa esteja viajando no final de semana, muitos fazem sanduíches, comem frutas. Algo
bem prático e simples.
Brian: I know very few people who like to do a big fancy lunch on the weekends. If it’s a party
maybe, but then there is no dinner.
Teacher Ca: O Brian também falou que conhece poucas pessoas que fazem almoço nos finais de
semana. Só se for uma festa, por exemplo, mas também quando fazem esse almoço para festa
acaba não fazendo por jantar.
Brian: That is a major tradition. We will call it Sunday lunch. You could be the grandparents
depending on how elderly Grandma is. But it is always a host. And it’s usually one of the females.
Whoever is the current matriarchs. She wanna bring everybody into her or whoever is the
richest, has the biggest house, that’s another one. You have a Sunday after church. So everyone
meets at church. The tradition in my family as we all went to the same church. But when was
your week to host, that family didn’t go to church, because the family will prepare the meal. So
that way the meal it’s always ready right then. However in America we have a new tradition that
allows the whole family go to church. We call it ‘The Buffet’. Especially Mother’s Day. Mother’s
Day is always full because Mama is not gonna be cooking that day. Father’s Day stuff like that. The
Sunday lunch is a tradition from Europe that was brought to Brazil and America. Many things are
very similar between Brazil and America. The food changes a little bit but the tradition themselves
are the same.

Lunch Time deles/ A tradição da hora do almoço. Então podemos entender que eles são bem
práticos e rápidos na hora do almoço. Uma salada, um sanduíche. Coisas que não gaste muito
tempo da Americano. Então praticidade. Mesmo que ele tenham tempo, eles vão deixar isso para
uma janta. Uma coisa que eles podem perder mais tempo para janta.
