Agward: Hello.
Teacher Ca: Hello, how are you?
Agward: I'm okay. How are you?
Teacher Ca: I’m great, thanks. Can you help us with some talking about Thanksgiving?
Agward: Yes, of course.
Teacher Ca: Can you tell us the tradition the preparation when it comes to Thanksgiving?
Agward: Yes, I'm not much of a cooker myself I don't actually prepare anything. But it does take usually a
few hours of preparation because they're cooking the turkey and they’re usually getting it frozen. So
usually between 3 to 4 hours because you’ll have to wait to defrost then you have to cook it. And the
turkey’s usually the main part of the dish. That’s why you see it in the middle of the table and everyone’s
waiting to eat it. And then we have a lot of side dishes that kind of go with it. You have mash potatos and
gravys, you have cranberry sauce, you can have stuffing which is like breadcrumbs made with different
kinds of vegetables. It’s really good. Also my personal favorite Macaroni and Cheese is usually served there
as well. And then variance of vegetables at least. You can have string beans, carrots. Whatever that family
wants to cook.
Teacher Ca: Eu perguntei para ele quais seriam as tradições do Thanksgiving. Como ele é de Nova York ele
falou que ele come Peru geralmente congelado e leva um tempo para poder descongelar o Peru e preparar.
Quando a gente fala de Thanksgiving, o Prato Principal/Main Dish, é o peru. E com Peru,tem que ter os
Acompanhamentos/Side Dishes um deles é o Gravy/Molho de Carne, Mash Potatos/Purê de Batata, tem o
Cranberry Sauce/Geleia de Cranberry e alguns vegetais também. Eles usam muitos alguns vegetais como
Side Dish/Acompanhamento.
Teacher Ca: Ok. But when you talk about cooking, preparing food, Does it take more than one day? Because
here in Brazil we do it for Christmas. We have preparation and sometimes it takes days for us to prepare it.
So does it happen there?
Agward: Maybe some families that do have time someitmes to cook. That Mom like to make like a custom
but usually no, because the culture is a little different. We don't get the time off up to Thanksgiving. If
you're working in a full-time job, the kids too. So the school let out in everything but the parents will have
to get to work. So we don't have days to prepare it. Usually we get up really early and everyone's in the
kitchen helping to make the food for the evening.
Teacher Ca: Does the family work together?
Agward: Again It depends on the family. Usually there's football playing, TV, so the man kind of drift away
from the kitchen while the woman are in the kitchen cooking. That's usually the dynamic.
Teacher Ca: Eu fiz uma comparação com o nosso Natal, uma comparação do nosso jantar o Natal, e ele
falou para mim que por ele está em Nova York as pessoas ainda trabalharem até o dia anterior eles não
tem muito tempo para ficar dias preparando o jantar. As crianças não tem aula nesse dia, mas só que as
pessoas trabalham. Eles acordam muito cedo e ficou na cozinha todo e eu perguntei se todo mundo na
família ajuda, e ele falou que uma coisa muito legal no Thanksgiving e que eles tem o jogo do futebol
passando na TV nesse dia. Então como esse dia também tem o jogo do futebol, dividi um pouco: as
mulheres ficam um pouco mais na cozinha, aquela tradição da família mesmo, e o homem assistindo
futebol. Quem gosta de futebol, está lá no futebol e quem gosta de cozinhar, está na cozinha. Então eles
ficam assim. Eles dividem as tarefas assistindo futebol e cozinhando. Mas, geralmente, tem alguém
encarregado de cozinhar. Então fica lá no preparo para o grande jantar deles.
Teacher Ca: Do they have special dessert for it?
Agward: Yes, Pumpkin Pie is a big dessert. There's different kinds. So you can have Pumpkin Pie, Sweet
Potato Pie, which I prefer, you have it like cream on top, Pecan Pie. A lot of Pies actually for dessert. They’re
quite delicious. The amount of them is super sweet but like to go to. So any Pie you can really think of it’s
kind of typical but usually we stick to Pecan Pumpkinor or Sweet Potato Pie.
Teacher Ca: Aqui eu perguntei de sobremesas/desserts. Presta atenção ique isso aqui é bem legal que
vocês prestem atenção, porque na hora de pronunciar: desert é deserto e dessert/sobremesa. Então eu
perguntei a ele o tipo de sobremesa e a mais comum é Pumpkin Pie/Torta de Abóbora; que é muito
comum. Eles fazem a Pumpkin Pie para comemorar mesmo. Ele também se associa com o Peru, associa
muito com o Thanksgiving. Ele citou várias tortas como o Pecan Pie/Torta de Pecã, tem também a Sweet
Potato Pie que é um tipo de Batata Doce. E ele falou também ele falou que em geral muitas tortas são
usadas como sobremesas, como sobremesas para eles no Thanksgiving dinner/Jantar do Thanksgiving.
Do you have a time to stick together and have dinner?
Agward: Usually (inint) [00:07:46] you try to get it around 5 or 6 o’clocks. But it takes all day so we start
really early because there's usually one oven and a lot of other things that you cooking have to be in the
oven or in the stove so you wanna be able to make sure that everything's cooked till early end. A lot of
people have big gourmet kitchen so you have to kind of prioritize and work on around that. So we start
really in the morning and then you work all day, you cook all day until it’s ready.
Teacher Ca: Eu perguntei a hora: “Qual é a hora que vocês sentam para jantar?” E ele disse que como
demora para preparar, como tem one oven/ um fogão, um forno só, ele falou que demora a preparação da
comida. Então por volta das 17:00 horas e 18:00 horas da noite eles já jantam porque eles começam bem
cedo então às 17:00 ou 18:00 horas eles já estão jantando.
Teacher Ca: Ok. I'm talking about traditional family because I know nowdays sometimes some things may
have changed. Does it used to be like getting all people together praying and saying thanks?
Agward: Yes, so you can still get together and it usually that’s tradition around the table before you eat and
say what you’re thankful for. At the timethe family to come from all over the country to get together
because nowadays families are usually very far apart depending on the school the kids are going to, maybe
the parents moved away from the grandparents so there's like everyone comes together to kind of be a
family and say what they are thankful for and be reunited and it's fine.
Teacher Ca: E o grande barato do Thanksgiving foi que ele disse que embora as pessoas os familiares
morem longe, é a hora que eles reunit/que eles se juntam, se reúnem para poder agradecer. A hora que
eles sentam à mesa eles falam o que eles são thankful for/o que eles agradece, o que eles são gratos. Então
cada um fala o que eles são ‘thankful for’. Antes da janta cada um fala a razão de ser grato durante o ano
todo deles. Que virou uma tradição histórica já, de uma coisa bem histórica que era sobre a colheita do
passado no inverno. Então a reunião hoje é: “o que você é grato durante o seu ano?” Essa é a tradição que
veio se modificando durante os anos.
Teacher Ca: Can you tell me something you are thankful for?
Agward: The ability to travel. Because I do enjoy different cultures, learning about different customs and
languages and food. I actually love different foods. So I love the ability to be able to travel to different
countries and meet different people.
Teacher Ca: So you're thankful for that?
Agward: Yes, I am. Because it helps me to be a better person. So I enjoy that. I’m thankful for that.
Teacher Ca: Aqui eu perguntei a ele o que ele era thankful for: “Whar you’re thankful for?/O que você
agradece? O que você é grato?” E ele respondeu que ele era grato pela comida/’for food,’ ‘getting to know
new cultures’/novas culturas e ‘be able to travel’/ser capaz de viajar, fazer viagens pelo mundo. Então ele é
‘thankful’ por isso. E você? Você é ‘thankful’ for what? Whar are you thankful for? Fala para mim. Pode
