Aprenda Ingles Online Podcast – EP.O2 – Como usar Other, Another, Others em inglês – Dicas de inglês

TRANSCRIÇÃO DO EPISÓDIO 02 DO PODCAST APRENDA INGLÊS ONLINE:

Teacher Ca: Podcast – Aprenda Ingles Online. The best way to improve your English.

Welcome to Aprenda Inglês Online Podcast. Este é o nosso segundo episódio. Number two episode.

I’m your hostess Teacher Ca, the podcast do Cambly, que é simplesmente a melhor plataforma para quem quer aprender Inglês com nativos. E no episódio de hoje, iremos conversar sobre as diferenças entre Other e Another.

F: What?

I’m going to read other book or Another book?

M: Let it begin.

Brian: Hello.

Teacher Ca: Hello. How are you?

Brian: I’m ok, what about you?

Teacher Ca: I’m great.

Brain: My name is Brian, I’m from Hershey, Pennsylvania, USA.

What city are you from in Brazil?

Teacher Ca: I’m from Rio de Janeiro.

Brian: In English we say Rio de Janeiro, because we pronounce R differently. That’s a big difference. So, nice to meet you. Welcome back to Cambly.

Teacher Ca: Thank you so much.

Brian: Go ahead.

Teacher Ca: I have a question: Could you, please, tell me the difference between Another and Other and the situations I can use them? Could you give me some examples?

Brian: Yes. Let’s make it simple. When we speak about grammar I like to talk about food. Food is a universal idea. Everybody eats. Going to the bathroom and using the toilet it’s also universal but it’s not pretty. So, let’s talk about food. My father used to say: “food, bathroom, death and birth, are the only things that is universal for all people.” So, food is the only one pretty among all those.

Let’s talk about apples and bananas. Apples and bananas are both fruits. They’re not vegetables, they’re fruits. But, there is different kinds of fruit. There are apples and bananas. So, what will you say if you go to the grocery stories? For instance: I like these apples. I want another one. Meaning a second apple. Apple number two. Same kind.

No mercado, usando frutas, você diz: gostei dessa maçã. I like this apple. Eu quero outra. I want Another one.

Brian: Another means copy and paste.

Teacher Ca: Copy and paste. Funny.

Brian: Yes. Like when my friend had twins. She gave birth to twins and my wife bought that little babies special One Z for the baby. One says Ctrl C and the other one says Ctrl V.

Teacher Ca: Perfect.

Brian: I saw it for triples. For triples, it says: “copy, paste.” And the third one says, “Yes. I know. Paste again.”

Teacher Ca: That’s great.

Brian: But, yes. It’s like that. It’s these identical choices.

Ele simplifica o Another como: copy and paste; copiar e colar. O famoso Ctrl C Ctrl V in English.

Brian: So, I wanna Another apple, I wanna Another burger. You go to Mcdonald’s and say: I wanna a cheeseburger. Thank you. That was good, but when you say: I wanna Another cheeseburger. You mean Another of the same. Something that is identical to the first one.

Teacher Ca: Ok.

Brian: You could say something like: honey, we already have one child, do you really want Another one? Another one, meaning: not identical, but Another child. Not a dog or a cat.

Teacher Ca: Ok.

Brian: Now, let’s talk about Other, O.T.H.E.R. It could be like, for example: I don’t like this apple. I want some Other fruit. A different fruit. There are other choices. Another tends to be a noun, whereas other tends to be an adjective. So, I like this apple, I want Another one or I don’t like this apple. I want some Other fruit. I wanna choose a different kind of fruit, like banana. Or you could say: I really like this fruit. Are there Other similar choices? Meaning not the same, but close. Or if you see one apple, and you take the apple and it tastes good. But you do not see any Others. You could go to the grocery store person and say: do you have any Other apples? I need more. I liked this one, do you have other?

Teacher Ca: Ok.

Brian: Other and Another tends to be adjectives. Another one, other one. Other usually means, different, and Another usually means, the same.

Teacher Ca: Ok.

Brian: Well, I don’t know if you can open a web page on your phone or not, there’s actually, Cambly pages for this. But, is it clear?

Teacher Ca: Yes. Another, as you’ve said, it’s like the same.

Brian: Try to give an example sentence for which word.

Teacher Ca: Another. You eating pizza and you want Another piece, because you’re still hungry.

Brian: Yes, like: son, you’re still hungry, have you Another slice?

Teacher Ca: So, I wanna Other slice of pizza which it’s, for example, of different flavor.

Brian: Yes. There’re two ways to use Other. It could be the Other piece, because Other it’s an adjective; descriptive word, or it could be the Other pizza. When my wife gets, brings some pizza home, she goes to a pizza hut and she gets like pineapple and ham. Then, she gets one of pepperoni and marshmallow bacon, something like that. So, my one son will be like: I don’t like this pizza. I don’t like pineapple. Then, I ask him: do you want a piece of the Other one? Or he can say: I like this pizza. Then I ask: do you want Another Slice? Or do you want a piece of the Other pizza? If we’re down to the edge, everybody’s been eating for the left 20 minutes, and there’s only two pieces left. For instance: Haiden, I’m going to eat this piece, would you like to eat the Other one? There’s only two left, two choices.

Teacher Ca: Ok. I got it.

Brian: Or let’s say there are five pieces of pizza left and I’m going to eat one more, because I’m pretty full, I could ask: do you want the Others? It’s still four left. Do you want to take the Others, the box, and walk away?

Teacher Ca: Yes.

Brian: If you ever go to a pizza party and you see a big stack of pizzas, because there’s always something left, you can ask: who want these two pizzas left? I’ll just take it. Of course. Why not?

Teacher Ca: Ok. I got it.

Another slice of pizza.

Teacher Ca: Thank you so much. Nice talking to you.

Brian: Sure. Ok. Take care.

Teacher Ca: Bye Bye. Thank you.

Brian: Bye bye.

Teacher Ca: Acho que ficou mais claro o uso do Other e Another.

Lembrem-se do copy and paste.
