Vamos escutar a conversa com a tutora Verdy do Cambly?
Ela é de Chicago e vale lembrar que Slangs/Gírias, podem mudar de um lugar para o outro.
M: Let it begin.
Teacher Ca: Hello.
Verdy: Hi.
Teacher Ca: How are you?
Verdy: I’m doing well. How are you?
Teacher Ca: I’m great. I’m Teacher Ca,
Verdy: Nice to meet you. My name is Verdy.
Teacher Ca: Verdy, can you think of most used slangs nowdays there?
Verdy: Ok. Sure. I will give you some slangs (inint) [00:01:35] where I’m from. I’m from Chicago.
I’m a Chicago native, I have a listened in different parts of the world, but most of this will be
based on Chicago (inint) [00:01:44].
Teacher Ca: Ok.
Verdy: Some of the slangs that’s used is very trendy, comes from some of our artists. So you
will here things like: “Popping”, “what’s popping?”as asking, “what’s going on?”, “what’s
happening?”.
You can ask to your friend: “What’s popping?” or “Girl, I had a hard day at work today. My
husband is getting on my nervus.” That’s another one. “Getting on my nervus” means “annoying
me”.
Teacher Ca: “What’s popping?” means “what’s up?”
Verdy: Yes. It means, “what’s going on?”, “what’s happening?”
Teacher Ca: Ok. So, people use this a lot nowdays but informally?
Verdy: I would say the younger generation use it informally when they’re with thei friends and
they’re being silly, they’re just grouping off, they would say “What’s popping?”. I’ve done it to my
friends, I want to group off and be silly, I text them: “Girl, ‘what’s popping?’”, in a very friendly
way not in a professional enviroment, not in a professional e-mail.
Teacher Ca: Quando as pessoas querem perguntar “what’s going on?”, “what’s happening?”/ “o
que está acontecendo?”, elas podem usar também o “what’s popping?”. Então, quando falamos
com um amigo podemos usar gírias, e “what’s popping?” é muito usada. Você pode perguntar a
um amigo: “What’s popping?” he can say, “I’m just finishing my homework”/“Estou terminando
meu dever de casa”. Or “What’s happening?”. Eu tive um dia pesado, meu marido is “getting on
my nervus” / “meu marido está me tirando do sério, está me perturbando”.
Então, “getting on my nervus” é tirar do sério, perturbar. As pessoas usam o “what’s popping?”
de uma maneira bem descontraída. Não usem estas gírias em conversas profissionais.
Verdy: Another form of saying is “Bay”. That is used when you have a partner, a girlfriend or boyfriend.
So, it can be your boyfriend or your girlfriend, (tender neutral) [00:03:57]. So you can say Bay, “this is
my ‘bay’”. For example: ‘“Bay’, can you go grab me a water bottle?” – When you want your “Bay” to do
something for you. It’s a (inint) [00:04:10].

Teacher Ca: Podemos usar o “Bay” de uma forma carinhosa para falar de namorado ou namorada. Por
exemplo: “This is my ‘Bay’”/ “Este é meu namorado, esta é minha namorada.” Can you grab me a bottle
of water, please? / Você pode pegar uma garrafa de água, por favor?
Então você usa o “Bay” para falar de uma forma carinhosa, afetiva com seu namorado ou namorada.
Verdy: Another one would be “Floss”. This is most common in the Hip Hop, Rap world when yo have
lots of jewls, lots of gold, chains on you. You’re really shinning with your earring, your bracelet. They’re
“flossing”. They have all these shinnies jewelry on. How you would use it is: “He’s ‘flossing’”(inint)
[00:05:08]. And you would say that you describe what they’re doing. They’re “flossing”. They have all
these jewelry and they’re just being on a show off with their jewelry. They’re “flossing”.
Teacher Ca: But does that mean in a bad way?
Verdy: Well, it can be. I can be in a bad way when you’re talking to your boyfriend about someone else.
But it can also be in a way of admiration.
My father some times says: “Look at you. You’re ‘floosing’. You’re like a girl teen on, you got your
place. You’re looking good. I see you.” Of course, if I was doing it in a (gentlemen toy) [00:05:52].
You’re trying to “floss”. “Who do you think you are? With you’re gold chain.” In that context. The
negetive way.
So, it can be used negatively or positively.
Teacher Ca: A Verdy disse que usar o “Floss” é muito comum no mundo do Hip Hop e do Rap, quando
as pessoas usam muitas joias, pulseiras de ouro, vários acessórios brilhantes. Podem dizer que as pessoas
estão “flossing”. Por exemplo: “He’s ‘flossing’” / “Ele está cheio de ouro.”
“Flossing” que significa “show off”/aparecer. Mas eu perguntei se o “flossing” tinha um sentido negativo.
Ela disse que às vezes sim, mas que também pode ser usado de forma positiva,, no sentido de admiração.
E que às vezes, ela diz para o pai dela: “You are flossing” / “Você está todo ‘bonitão’”. Então, usamos o
“flossing”.
Verdy: Another one is “Spill the tea”. This is about gossiping, when you want to push your friend to tell
someone’s business, or to tell you something that happened. For instance: “Girl, ‘spill the tea’”.
“I saw you talking to Anthony over there”, “spill the tea” “What’s going on?”/“Tell me what’s
happening”/“Tell me what the problems are”/“Tell me the story”. So it can be “spelling the tea”, so
(what’s in your cup?, The hot puppet) [00:07:32] about your own business or someone’s business.
And you’re spilling it, sharing with other people.
Teacher Ca: Quando você quer saber do seu amigo, ou pedir para ele contar uma fofoca, dizer algo
sobre outra pessoa, você usa o “spill the tea”. Por exemplo: “Girl, ‘spill the tea’, I saw you talking to
Anthony over there/ Conta tudo, coloca pra fora. Eu vi você falando com o Anthony.” “Spill the
tea”,“What’s going on”/“Diga o que está acontecendo, quais são os problemas? Conte a história.”
Verdy: So these are very common and there’s so many. Context are very important for understanding
them.
Sometimes we reference movies. Some of our last slang is “bye, felicia”. It’s from a movie called
“Friday”. It’s a reference to a character who is always asking for something: “Can I borrow this?, can I
borrow that?” So we say, “bye, Felicia”. And their hands and their face is showing her the way. So, it’s a
funny way to dismiss someone. To say: “Get away from me”.
If your brother is bothering you or a friend is annoying you and joking around, you can say: “Bye,
Felicia”, and just go away.
Your friend’s name is not “Felicia”, but it does not matter. What you mean is just “Get out of my face”,
“Get way from me”.
Teacher Ca: Uma coisa bem interessante que Verdy disse é que eles pegam alguns detalhes ou
referências de alguns filmes, ou seriados, para também usar como gíria ou memes. Como o exemplo que
ela deu de “Bye, Felicia” do filme Friday, referindo-se a uma menina que sempre pede algo emprestado.
E as pessoas usam o “Bye, Felicia” para se afastar de alguém, do tipo: “Cai fora”, “Vê se você some”,
para a pessoa sair de perto mesmo. É uma forma engraçada de se despedir de alguém também, do tipo “Já

vai tarde”, seria equivalente ao “Bye, Felicia”.
Se alguém tiver te perturbando e você quiser brincar com ela, você também pode usar o “Bye, Felicia”/
“Já vai tarde”.
Mas é óbvio que a pessoa não precisa se chamar Felicia.
Verdy: So, these are a few popular slangs very used with American context; In Chicago and also in other
parts. Others cities in the regions also has different forms os slangs. It’s a huge variety.
Teacher Ca: Ok. Bye, bye.
