legal e gostosa.

F: Yes
sistema educacional americano.
M: Let it begin.
Teacher Ca: Hello, how are you?
Leeyen: Hello, I’m doing well. How are you?
Teacher Ca: I’m great. My name is Teacher Ca. What’s your name?
Leeyen: My name is teacher Leeyen.
Teacher Ca: Nice to meet you Leeyen.
Leeyen: Nice to meet you too.
Teacher Ca: Ok. Can you help me and tell me what does the school system in American looks like?
Leeyen: In American the school system kind vary depending on what state you’re living. I live in
the state of Missouri. So in the midwest. The way my school system is set up is our school runs,
we have elementary school, and we have a middle school and then we have a high school.
Our elementary students starts coming to us when they are about five or six years old. They
enter into kindergarten. Here is where they starts learning short words, they focus on colors,
team work – working as a group – and just getting into the flow of school.
By the end of kindergarten they’re reading small books, they’re able to do simple arithmetic and
by this time they usually have a good sense of how the school works.
Teacher Ca: Os alunos do ensino fundamental/elementary students, começam a frequentar as
Leeyen: One thing finished with kindergarten they get promoted to first-grade, or grade one.
That’s where the school starts becoming a liitle more serious. We start to focus one writing,
more complex math with higher numbers, usually in the tens and twenties. We focus on spelling
more, write more, and we develop what we call “station”. So, we learn how to rotate throughout
the station.
Now, something that is different in American is that students will stay in the same classroom all
day. The only time that students live their classrooms is to go what we call “specials”.
We go to art, music, and physical education every day. And once a week we also go to library.
Most schools in American have a library in their schools, which is a very good thing to have.
So, by the end of first grade the students are able to read on their own, they are able to write
almost fluently; they’re still about the age of six or seven, and they know the rules of school,
they understand the flow it.

Leeyen: So they continue on at the elementary school untill they’re about to the grade five.
Thata is the grade that actually I teach. In Fifth grade we start doing something different. My fifth
grade students, we switch classes but just for reading. And we switch among three teachers.
That helps us as teachers to focus on like, what the students especifically need to know
(literature wise) [00:05:32] And we can focus more on their skill-set.
By the end of fifth grade they’re doing basic algebra and writing two page papers, at most.
Based on a certain topic that we give them.
Teacher Ca: Os alunos continuam no Elementary School/Ensino Fundamental, até chegar no
Grade Five/Quinto Ano.
vai do First Grade ao Fifth Grade.
Leeyen: Once students have completed grade five, they are done with Elementary school. That
is when they move on to Middle School or Junior High. And what you call it depends on the
region or the school in which the student is studying in. We call it Middel School.
When the student gets to middle school or grade six, that’s where they start changing classes
everyday.
So they start in one room, what we call “the home room”. And they stay there for about 40
minutes. Here they are finishing home work, reading quietly or just going to get extra help in
other subject. Then they go especific classes and they follow the same schedule every day.
So they go for one teacher for reading, another one for math, one for science and other one for
history. But what’s different about Middle School is they only go to the “specials” once a week.
So they go to art once a week, they go to (Peehi) [00:07:13] twice a week; sometimes more, to
music twice a week.
That’s the same for seventh grade and eighth grade. Eighth grade we consider to be the end of
middle school.
Teacher Ca: O “Middle School”/Ensino fundamental, antigo Ginásio, é conhecido como Junior
High.
Ano e no Oitavo Ano.
O oitavo ano é considerado o final do Middle School.
Leeyen: After Eighth Grade they go to High School. Grade Nine we call that being a
“Freshmen”, because it’s your first year at the High School. Freshmen year it gets more serious.
It becomes more academically structured because they know that college is on horizon in three
or more years.
So they will focus on more advanced literature, advanced math. By this time they are
researching certain topics and writing detailed papers about it. And some students are starting
to find classes that are interesting to them for what they career wants them to be. So if want to
be a hairdresser or work in a nail salon, we have courses that you can take that teach you how

to do hair, how to do nail, get facials, that kind of thing. We prepare them for down in the world
later.
When you’re in Junior year or your third year of high school, you can take what is call the “CNA
class”. So, you can become a nurse assistent and go work in nursing homes or hospitals in the
area.
Which is amazing because it gives the students a chance to be independent, while still living at
home and going to High School.
So, about your Junior year, college become of a reality. This is where students starts preparing
for their future. They start thinking: “What do I want to do when I grow up?”, “Do I wanna be a
Teacher?”, “Do I wanna be a Police Officer?”, “Do I wanna do nails?”, “Do I wanna be a
Capenter?”, and they start looking into different universities. And there are hundreds, maybe
thousands of universities all across to America.
Ninth
Grade é o primeiro ano do High School/Ensino Médio.
Leeyen: Senior year of High School, your forth year, Twelfth Grade, is where a lot of High
School students start picking colleges, they’ll pick where they wanna go.
All the time, they still finishing their High School course, some students have finished all of basic
work, and are taking additional courses at community colleges, or are taking what we call
“Trade Classes”. So, Electrician, (Salon) [00:12:18], Agriculture; if you live in that type of area,
and Mechanic also.
So, about the second semester or the last 4 ish month of your senior in High School,
that’s when you start applying to college. Some students will choose to go to community
colleges, which it’s just a very small university, where you only go for two years. You only go to
a community college for two years to get what is called your “GenEd”(General Education
Courses) out of the way. That’s why you go. You take your math, your literature, your general
college courses; which is very nice because it saves money and you get this classes out of the
way.
Leeyen: After your graduation, which is always a deal in America, because is like coming of
age, you have a summer off, you work, you apply for courses, and you prepare to go to college.
Preparing to go to college and getting into the college is two separate things. Because college
will look at your grades during High School. They will look at your grades since your freshmen
year at High School untill your Senior year. And most colleges won’t take you if your grade point
average GPA) is last than 2.5. Most colleges wants you to have a 2.5 or higher. And that saying
your are a straight C student or you are very average student, at best.
Some students who have a very low GPA will choose to go to a community college, to get their

GPA up begofe they move on to a bigger university.
And some students will choose to apply to get into a big university right away. Students who
wanna go into law or to be doctors, or Teacher will choose to go to university right away.
The process for you get into a university very depends on the university. So the university I went
to, what I did was: I call the college I wanted to go to, we talk about what I wanted, what I
wanted to do and what my goals was. And they helped me. They show me the classes I would
take, where I and my colleages would teach, and basically show me what I would do for the next
five year of my life. Then they gave me all information and show me how to apply.
Most colleges have a online platform where you can go and apply right there. You can apply
online and send your application feed. It’s very quick, it’s very simple. Some colleges you have
to write a paper application and send it in a money check to have it evaluated, to see if you get
in.
And it usually takes about 6 to 8 weeks if you were accepted into college.
último ano do High School).
for menor que 2.5.
Teacher Ca: Thank you and welcome back to your classes.
Leeyen: Thank you.
Teacher Ca: Bye, bye. Thank you so much.
Leeyen: No problem.
Teacher Ca: Essa foi a teacher Leeyen falando do sistema educacional Americano. Espero que
tenham gostado. Eu sou a Teacher Ca e aguardo vocês no próximo episódio.
Bye bye. Take care.
You can, You Cambly.
